I took advantage of a Tower Records autograph signing by the one and only Winston Rodney. Burning Spear and his burning band showed up in true rasta fashion, 45 minutes late! With eyes at half mast and dreads stuffed into his red gold green and black cap he rode the escalator up to the second floor and took a seat in the middle chair at a long table. The remaining 7 or 8 guys in his band filed in around him. None of them looked overly excited to be there, but when approached with comments and praise they accepted us warmly. I had gotten there early, having underestimated my travel time and so was the third person in line. The organizers had given us early birds free posters along with an 8x10 black and white promo photo. Winston signed them both simply SPEAR. The show that night at the Roxy was inspiring. The Spear burned bright for nearly 3 hours! Many positive vibrations mixed with patent political cynicism, Burning Spear is a preacher, teacher and one hell of an entertainer.
