Trey acknowledged the chant by saying that he couldn't hear what was being sung; that it sounded like some kind of "death chant"; and asked if this was the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice. No "Destiny Unbound" was played or teased. **With "Mike-O-Esquandolas" (instead of "Marco").

*With jam over band "ooo"ing - basically a "Crosseyed and Painless" jam without the actual vocals. **With whistling. ***Jammed out a bit, all drop out except Page who solos for about a minute and then takes it into "Loving Cup". ^During which someone with a backpack jumps onstage, runs across stage, and is chased by Pete Carini. ^^Which starts out with Fishman saying "The game is don't let Carini get you -- it's okay to jump onstage as long as Carini doesn't get you -- don't attack the drummer" and includes a chant throughout of "Carini's gonna get ya"; during which the lights go out and a glowstick war ensues. +Pete Carini is brought on stage.

Apparently this show was close to Fishman's hometown (Syracuse), and they were urging him to sing a song. *Keyword was "Burnin' Down" (see encore). **With "Jesus Just Left Chicago" tease. +First time played (Talking Heads cover, from the album "Speaking in Tongues"); with alternate lyric "Vernon Down the house." ++With "Hold Your Head Up" and "Mission Impossible Theme" teases; alternate lyric "drive me to Vernon."
08-15-98 Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, ME 1: Mike's Song > Simple, Beauty of My Dreams, Roggae, Split Open and Melt*, Poor Heart, The Moma Dance, The Divided Sky, Water in the Sky, Funky Bitch > Cities** > Weekapaug Groove (1:51) 2: The Wedge > Reba, Gumbo^ > Sanity, Tweezer > The Horse > Silent In The Morning, Chalkdust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light^^ (1:25) 3: NICU > David Bowie, Strange Design, Limb by Limb > Brian and Robert, Loving Cup E: Halley's Comet > Cavern, Tweezer Reprise (3/E 1:20) 4: Ambient Jam+ (0:55)
Lemonwheel Day One. *"By request, for a little boy named Sam." **Third verse was about "The Garden of Infinite Pleasantries," instead of the normal verse about Memphis; with "Sneakin' Sally" teases. ^Jam out of which sounded very much like "Tweezer Reprise." ^^With glowstick war. +After Tweezer Reprise, Trey explained that the band wanted to do something to combine ideas from The Clifford Ball and The Great Went, going into detail about the band/fan artwork from last year, and announced that the band would do a free-form ambient jam (lyric-less; nearly an hour long; "in the Brian Eno style of ambient music"), surrounded by candles that were made by the audience throughout the day. There were no other lights used during the jam (the band used only the light from the candles), which Trey explained is similar to the idea of what happens during a glow-stick war, with the light for the band coming from the fans. Because candles were placed througout the stage, Trey explained that they were in fact playing in a "temple of fire" (as advertisements for summer tour shows had announced). After finishing the jam, the band picked up tiki torches, lit them using the candles, and lit a small stone (?) temple (which was left burning overnight and throughout the band's performance on Sunday).
08-16-98 Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, ME Soundcheck: Jam, Ginseng Sullivan, Back At The Chicken Shack, Jam, She Caught The Katy, Dog Log, Blues Jam/Instrumental, I Gave My Love A Cherry, Please Send Me Someone to Love 1: Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin > Rift, Punch You in the Eye, Lawn Boy, Ya Mar > AC/DC Bag, Frankie Says, Birds of a Feather, Guyute, Possum (1:38) 2: Down With Disease -> Piper -> Ghost* > Fluffhead, When the Circus Comes, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Hold Your Head Up+ > Sexual Healing++ > Hold Your Head Up, Run Like an Antelope# (1:41) 3: Sabotage > Also Sprach Zarathustra, Wilson, The Mango Song, Character Zero, Bittersweet Motel, While My Guitar Gently Weeps (0:55) E: Harry Hood*, The Baby Elephant Walk^ (0:25)
Lemonwheel Day Two. *With glowstick war. +Long and drawn out; Fish introduces "his band": Trey Anastasio on drums, Mike "Cactus" Gordon on bass, "Chairman of the Boards" Page McConnell, and himself as "Bob Weaver." Fish introduces the next song as "a love song about a turtle" (which would have been "Terrapin"), but instead he performed Sexual Healing ("a much better song anyway") after "his band" finally ended "Hold Your Head Up." ++Includes "Sounds of Love" vacuum solo. #With "Sexual Healing" teases in the intro. ^Henry Mancini cover; see 12-01-92. Trey lit a tiki-torch (that looked like a "giant fake doobie") and used it to light a fuse which ran up Page's side of the stage, across the backdrop, down Fish's side of the stage, along the fence to a giant elephant-shaped structure near the stage, which came to life as fireworks went off both above it and from behind the stage. Fish made elephant noises with a trombone. Then, as they played the song, the elephant blew water out of its trunk (while smoke came from underneath it) and led the crowd towards the campground.

*First time played (Jimmy Smith (jazz organist) cover); had been played at soundcheck(s) in the past. **Preceded by Trey talking about how this was the first song they played together as a band. Contained a lot of "woo"-ing from Trey. At Trey's suggestion, they began to play it again, but shortly aborted the reprise and went into "Antelope." ^Produced a jam that segued into "Tweezer." ^^With "Manteca" teases; also included a Delay Loop Jam. #A capella.
10-31-98 Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV 1: Axilla (I), Punch You in the Eye, Roggae, Birds of a Feather, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley -> Chalk Dust Torture -> Lawn Boy, Mike's Song* -> Frankie Says -> Weekapaug Groove (1:15)2: Who Loves the Sun, Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll, Cool It Down, New Age, Head Held High, Lonesome Cowboy Bill, I Found a Reason, Train Round the Bend, Oh! Sweet Nuthin' (1:20) 3: Wolfman's Brother** -> Piper -> Ghost (0:55) E: Sleeping Monkey, Tweezer Reprise (0:09)
Set 2 was the "musical costume", the album "Loaded" by The Velvet Underground. The vocal breakdown for that set is: "Who Loves the Sun" (Trey); "Sweet Jane" (Page); "Rock and Roll" (Page); "Cool It Down" (Trey/Page); "New Age" (Trey); "Head Held High" (Trey); "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" (Fish); "I Found A Reason" (Trey/Mike); "Train Round the Bend" (Mike/Fish); "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" (Page). *With "Simple" teases. **With a 15-minute Ambient Jam (remniscent of Lemonwheel Ambient set; possibly including "Lifeboy," "Esther," "Makisupa" teases; with a glowstick war, lots of fog, and Fish on vacuum; ending with a "Ghost" tease). Then followed a 5-minute funk jam (similar to Traffic's "Low Sparks of High-Heeled Boys"; ended with a "Sleeping Monkey" tease) and then a quiet jam before segueing into "Piper." Altogether, more than 22 minutes between "Wolfman's" and "Piper."

Only about 4000 in attendance. *Acoustic; dedicated to Wendy and Lisa, two women whom Trey and Mike met the night before. **Acoustic; with a "Freebird ending", similar to the 07-20-98 "Poor Heart." Trey dedicated it to the people at the Dead Goat Saloon, and talked about getting free drinks and karoake. He also discussed the band picturing what it would be like if the entire audience were on stage with them, with no one in the audience. So they played it with this image in mind. ^With a tease of the "Monkey Man" (Rolling Stones, from their "Let It Bleed" album). ^Narration was about Jimmy going to Las Vegas and finding it too crowded and crazy (may be related to Trey's walking off the stage during "Ghost" on Halloween, given his comment on how overwhelmed he had felt, followed by a comment that "everyone has an off night"). So Jimmy decides to hitchhike to Salt Lake City, and he rides with a driver listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." Thus, the section of "Speak to Me" through "Eclipse" is the entirety of that album. #One verse sung twice; another omitted. ##First time played (Nirvana cover).

*With whistling; white chiffon-clad, wigged, winged nymphs/fairies were spinning and dancing in the center floor aisle. ^Fairies appeared on stage; heavy glowstick war during which floor ushers were picking up glowsticks from the aisles and returning them to patrons (who threw them again). ^^Different, jammed-out ending (during which faeries moved back to the center-of-floor aisle, gathered in a circle around some glowsticks, and emerged with glowsticks stuck into their white wigs). #"Piper" teases by Trey; without traditional Page-solo ending (they instead segued in to an ambient-style jam which got fiery and metal-ish before being abandoned); fairies/nymphs appeared on stage again, this time hiding behind Page's setup, the amps, and Fish's kit. ##First time played (never-recorded song originally written for the album "Billy Breathes" (and appearing on the outtakes from recoriding sessions for that album); Trey joked about it being a "new, but old" song, and this being its "world debut"); with Tom Marshall on vocals; dedicated to a man put into a wheelchair by a lacrosse accident (Chris Heinel, a student at the Hun School in Princeton, NJ). +With "Wipeout" quote; stop/start soloing by Fish, Mike, Trey/Page, and then the audience; fairies/nymphs appeared on stage topless.

One of them took an apple and handed it to him and explained that they wanted him to eat the apple as a gift, but he realized he had no teeth... but then a giant tooth grew out of his upper gum. But you can't eat an apple with one tooth. He began to get nervous that people would wonder why he wasn't eating the apple and he had a moment of panic. Luckily, at that moment, the sun flew closer to the sun than it had ever been in history, and as a result his first thought was that the earth would burn up, but instead, the earth acted in the way that a grape acts... it shrivled and turned into a raisin version of the earth. The ground wrinkled and became mountains and the people got crushed together into a big pile. Only moments before he'd been panicking, but being crushed together, he realized that all of his senses became much more vivid in the way that a raisin is more intense tasting than a grape... Sounds, emotions, love... And just as the earth was becoming a much more rich and vivid place, he found himself in this pile of people. This pile of people became a groping pile of love and goo and he realized that Gamehendge is a state of mind and you don't have to get there physically. He decided then that everyone needed to know how simple it was to turn yourself into a seething pile of goo, so he called upon the Famous Mockingbird to spread the word about this... ## - last "Fly Famous Mockingbird" 08/07/98 according to ZZYZX's Phish Stats ### - with Trey on keyboard #### - Beatles cover; last "A Day in the Life" 07/03/98 (165 shows) according to ZZYZX's Phish Stats @ - Rolling Stones cover; last "Emotional Rescue" 07/28/98 (150 shows) according to ZZYZX's Phish Stats; song ended with Trey setting up a delay loop before he and Mike moved to the front of the stage and began a bizarre synchonized duel involving them swinging their guitar and bass at each other and around themselves while wandering across the front of the stage and putting strange hats on Page and Jon; at one point Trey and Mike put both the guitar and bass down on the stage and kicked/stomped the stage beside them to produce more feedback; in the end Trey finally "defeated" Mike before the band walked off stage

12/30/03 American Airlines Arena - Miami, FL
1: Wilson, Sand > Shafty -> NICU, Weigh, Cities, Strange Design, Scent of a Mule, Bathtub Gin > 2001
2: Tube -> L.A. Woman > Birds of a Feather > L.A. Woman, Makisupa Policeman -> P-Funk Medley, Makisupa Policeman > Touch Me, Down With Disease
E: Contact, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Set 1: "Wilson" was unfinished. For the record, Earl Hindman, the actor who played Wilson on TV's "Home Improvement," died on Monday 12/29. "Gin" had "Show Biz Kids" (Steely Dan) and "After Midnight" teases. In the second verse of "NICU," Mike played the bassline from "Shafty." "2001" included a "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" jam (with some of the lyrics sung), as well as teases of "Bathtub Gin" and "Sand."
Set 2, Pre-Funk: "Tube" was reportedly played after Trey found a frisbee labelled "Tube" on the stage when returning from setbreak, which he flashed to the other band members and the front rows. "Tube," about 12 minutes long, was unfinished. "L.A. Woman" is a Doors cover, played for the first time (although it was soundchecked on 4/17/93 and teased in Possum on 5/17/92 and 5/30/93). Additionally, the first part of the "L.A. Woman" jam (before "Birds") had notable elements of "Timber Ho." "Birds" included a jam on "L.A. Woman." The keyword in "Makisupa" was something like: "we were going to have Fish sing 'Touch Me,' but we didn't have the horns and we've forgotten the song." Then Trey paused and said, "since I got your hopes up, maybe bringing out P-Funk would make up for it."
P-Funk: Then George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic emerged to accompany Phish through a 20-minute jam that touched on several P-Funk songs and lyrics. This medley reportedly included elements (roughly in order) of a rap on the theme "Booty Ain't Nothing But a Butt," "Get Off Your Ass and Jam," "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)," "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)," and "One Nation Under a Groove." Clinton riffed on the chorus from "Get Low" (by Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz). During the jam a boy (apparently in his late teens, possibly with Down syndrome) appeared onstage, dancing next to Trey. He may have jumped on the stage uninvited, because security (Carini?) came out about a quarter into the jam to escort him away. Shortly thereafter, Trey himself walked off the stage after them, and returned to escort the boy back to his original position on-stage. The boy resumed his dancing next to Trey, who got a noticeable kick out of how much fun the kid was having. At one point, Trey even seemed to indicate to a cameraman to tape the kid dancing -- he pointed to the cameraman, pointed back to the kid, and seemed to make a "film him" gesture. The boy remained onstage throughout the remainder of the P-Funk jam, and walked off with everyone else at its conclusion. At the end of the P-Funk jam, Fish was left on-stage alone playing the vacuum. Fish then exited, leaving the stage empty for a minute or two.
Set 2, Post-Funk: The band returned and re-launched into "Makisupa." During this return to "Makisupa," Trey said that to prove having P-Funk sit-in was better than having Fish sing "Touch Me," Fish would now sing one line a capella. Page played the intro of "Touch Me," and Fish then sang just the first line. "Touch Me" being the second Doors song played at the show, it may be relevant that Jim Morrison was prosecuted for allegedly exposing himself on March 1, 1969 at Miami's Dinner Key Auditorium -- not two miles from the American Airlines Arena. "Contact" had a different (unidentified) last line, possibly something about "L.A. Woman" ("L.A. Women make my funk the P-Funk" ??).
Aftershow: Mike Gordon appeared on bass during Parliament/Funkadelic's scheduled post-Phish gig at Miami's Ice Palace Soundstage.
2/31/03 American Airlines Arena - Miami, FL
1: Wilson > Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Moma Dance, Guyute, You Enjoy Myself, First Tube > Tube
2: Stash, Seven Below, Lawn Boy, Chalkdust Torture > Slave to the Traffic Light > Chalkdust Torture
3: Jungle Boogie > Auld Lang Syne > Iron Man, Runaway Jim, Simple, Reba, I Didn't Know > Feel the Heat, Run Like An Antelope
E: Frankenstein
Pre-Midnight: Set-up included screens behind the stage, flamingoes and palm trees on it, and huge coconut-looking balloons hanging from above. "Wilson" picked up with the "BLAT BOOM" line -- that is, where last night's unfinished version left off. "Weekapaug" had an "Auld Lang Syne" tease/jam, and "Jungle Boogie" vocals. "Moma Dance" had a "Divided Sky" tease. During the sustained Note in "YEM," Trey teased "Auld Lang Syne." "Tube" began mid-way through, finishing where last night's version left off. Stash had a "Slave" teast, and "Seven Below" an "Auld Lang Syne" tease. "Chalkdust" had "Auld Lang Syne" teases. During the second setbreak, the PA music included a number of car-related songs (foreshadowing the gag at midnight). "Jungle Boogie" is a Kool and the Gang cover, first time played (although it has long been in Pork Tornado's repertoire).
Midnight Gag: As midnight neared during "Jungle Boogie," Fish's drum kit was moved to the side of the stage. A 10'x10'-square platform with a circular rug that had been in the back left of the stage was moved into Fish's usual spot. The rug turned out to be a cover for a hollow center, which lined up with a trap door under the stage. A miniature car, reportedly a Mini Cooper, was lowered to the same spot on the stage. The gutted car was painted light blue, with flames on the front, and was blacklight-sensitive, giving it a phosphorescent glow. A full marching band, replete with cheerleaders (in masks), came out of the car one-by-one (including tuba/sousaphone players!). The band was the Miami Palmetto Sr. High School Marching Panther Band. Cheerleaders were not [all?] from the high school, but rather costumed adults. The marching band also had a mascot in a number 27 jersey (possibly TN Titans' Eddie George's shirt?), with the name taped over with black tape, wearing a bunny (?) mask. Also emerging were costumed dancers similar to [same as?] the sort of demented bunny-women present at the IT Festival this summer. The band members and others were actually walking in from the back center of the stage, up a set of stairs under the stage, and out of the car -- giving the effect that they were all coming from the car itself. With the stage covered with dancers, the marching band drumming and blaring...Fish and the jersey-wearing mascot (and a bunny-creature?) counted the clock down to midnight. A massive balloon drop followed with "Auld Lang Syne." "Iron Man," a Black Sabbath cover, was performed instrumental only with the marching band (and fairly briefly). Phish has never played "Iron Man" before, although Mike teased it in "Wilson" on 2/20/93.
Post-Midnight: "I Didn't Know" had Fish out front on vacuum, singing "Feel the Heat" through the vacuum, with Trey singing some lines as well as he filled in on drums. At one point during this mayhem, Fish climbed on Page's piano. "Feel the Heat," played for the first time, is a song sung by Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) with Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly) in "Boogie Nights." The ditty appears as the intro to the film's soundtrack. Trey dedicated it to the Miami Heat basketball team, and called it "Feel Feel Feel Feel the Heat." Before launching into "Frankenstein," Trey teased the first notes of "Fluffhead."

E: Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley > "Coconut" Vocal Jam -> "Sonic Dress" Rap -> Vocal Jam
Fenton Williams (Dave Matthews Band crew) was at the light board in place of Chris Kuroda. "Girls" is a Jay-Z cover (first time played); with Jen Hartswick assisting on vocals. "Secret Smile" featured a wholly new arrangement (about 7 minutes long). "Sally" led loosely into a vocal jam akin to the kind found in 1980s versions, then a vocal jam around the song "Coconut" (Harry Nilsson song, from his 1971 album "Nilsson Schmilsson"), then into a rap by Trey about Fish's sonic dress (which was not played), and then into a free-form vocal jam.

E: Harry Hood
Fenton Williams (Dave Matthews Band crew) was at the light board in place of Chris Kuroda. Toward the end of "Wilson," Trey teased "Little Drummer Boy." "Love You" featured the debut of Fish's Sonic Dress. The fabric of the dress is woven from audiotape taken from Fish's own collection, and Jon uses special tape-head gloves to "play" it. (Some said it sounded much like Fish playing a washboard under his dress.) For more information, see artist-creator Alyce Santoro's website.

"Harpua" was teased toward the end of the "Piper" jam. Trey
forgot all of the words to the third verse of "Cavern," only just pulling
it together in time for "deadly ice calm" line. He then eked out a quite
self-referential "Purple Haze" tease before coming back in with the fourth
verse. "Limb by Limb" may have contained some "Disease"-type jamming.

I've been hooked on keeping track of setlists ever since I first started seeing Phish. However I got this text and all it's detail from the Helping Friendly Book. My thanks to them. Now go check out their site
