#With vicious start/stop jamming.
*Most of Harpua had Les Claypool and Larry
LaLonde from Primus. After the opening, Les
did a rap about a weed or something like that.
Then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy
and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop
and camp. At the campsite, they start yodelling.
$Based on the song from Jim Stafford's "Spiders
and Snakes" album. #With yodelers. John McEuen
and Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel
tune. The story continues, Jimmy & Poster
meet up with four "Elvii" on the edge of Las
Vegas and have a duel. ^The four "Elvii" sing
the first few verses of "Suspicious Minds"
and then Fish continues. Jimmy (Fish?) is
victorious. Then the dog/cat fight. Harpua
wins and the song finishes. At some point
everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the
drummer for Primus, shows up for "Suzie Greenberg".
**All of the above musicians; with "Suzie

stage. Then, the crowd "carries" the pieces
of this design to the side of the venue where
it is assembled and hoisted for everyone to
see onto a tower. This wood tower is tall
and covered in painted plywood and has been
built during the two shows. As "Harry Hood"
goes into its jam, Trey asks Chris to turn
the lights off, and the band jams while the
front section has a gigantic Glow Stick War.
Trey tells the crowd at the end of the jamto
"go and get more of those, because that was
cool." #No Muel Duel. ^The entire art tower
was burned to the ground. |

with "Sneakin' Sally" teases. ^Jam out of
which sounded very much like "Tweezer Reprise."
^^With glowstick war. +After Tweezer Reprise,
Trey explained that the band wanted to do
something to combine ideas from The Clifford
Ball and The Great Went, going into detail
about the band/fan artwork from last year,
and announced that the band would do a free-form
ambient jam (lyric-less; nearly an hour long;
"in the Brian Eno style of ambient music"),
surrounded by candles that were made by the
audience throughout the day. There were no
other lights used during the jam (the band
used only the light from the candles), which
Trey explained is similar to the idea of what
happens during a glow-stick war, with the
light for the band coming from the fans. Because
candles were placed througout the stage, Trey
explained that they were in fact playing in
a "temple of fire" (as advertisements for
summer tour shows had announced). After finishing
the jam, the band picked up tiki torches,
lit them using the candles, and lit a small
stone (?) temple (which was left burning overnight
and throughout the band's performance on Sunday).

"his band": Trey Anastasio on drums, Mike
"Cactus" Gordon on bass, "Chairman of the
Boards" Page McConnell, and himself as "Bob
Weaver." Fish introduces the next song as
"a love song about a turtle" (which would
have been "Terrapin"), but instead he performed
Sexual Healing ("a much better song anyway")
after "his band" finally ended "Hold Your
Head Up." ++Includes "Sounds of Love" vacuum
solo. #With "Sexual Healing" teases in the
intro. ^Henry Mancini cover; see 12-01-92.
Trey lit a tiki-torch (that looked like a
"giant fake doobie") and used it to light
a fuse which ran up Page's side of the stage,
across the backdrop, down Fish's side of the
stage, along the fence to a giant elephant-shaped
structure near the stage, which came to life
as fireworks went off both above it and from
behind the stage. Fish made elephant noises
with a trombone. Then, as they played the
song, the elephant blew water out of its trunk
(while smoke came from underneath it) and
led the crowd towards the campground. |

*Acoustic; dedicated to Wendy and Lisa,
two women whom Trey and Mike met the night
before. **Acoustic; with a "Freebird ending",
similar to the 07-20-98 "Poor Heart." Trey
dedicated it to the people at the Dead Goat
Saloon, and talked about getting free drinks
and karoake. He also discussed the band
picturing what it would be like if the entire
audience were on stage with them, with no
one in the audience. So they played it with
this image in mind. ^With a tease of the
"Monkey Man" (Rolling Stones, from their
"Let It Bleed" album). ^Narration was about
Jimmy going to Las Vegas and finding it
too crowded and crazy (may be related to
Trey's walking off the stage during "Ghost"
on Halloween, given his comment on how overwhelmed
he had felt, followed by a comment that
"everyone has an off night"). So Jimmy decides
to hitchhike to Salt Lake City, and he rides
with a driver listening to Pink Floyd's
"Dark Side of the Moon." Thus, the section
of "Speak to Me" through "Eclipse" is the
entirety of that album. #One verse sung

17 years) after these next 6 shows before
talking about the strange dream he had last
night that he was sitting in the middle of
a field on a beautiful day, when suddenly
he saw from the periphary of his vision people
walking towards him... an army of people surrounding
him before sitting down. One of them took
an apple and handed it to him and explained
that they wanted him to eat the apple as a
gift, but he realized he had no teeth... but
then a giant tooth grew out of his upper gum.
But you can't eat an apple with one tooth.
He began to get nervous that people would
wonder why he wasn't eating the apple and
he had a moment of panic. Luckily, at that
moment, the sun flew closer to the sun than
it had ever been in history, and as a result
his first thought was that the earth would
burn up, but instead, the earth acted in the
way that a grape acts... it shrivled and turned
into a raisin version of the earth. The ground
wrinkled and became mountains and the people
got crushed together into a big pile. Only
moments before he'd been panicking, but being
crushed together, he realized that all of
his senses became much more vivid in the way
that a raisin is more intense tasting than
a grape... Sounds, emotions, love... And just
as the earth was becoming a much more rich
and vivid place, he found himself in this
pile of people. This pile of people became
a groping pile of love and goo and he realized
that Gamehendge is a state of mind and you
don't have to get there physically. He decided
then that everyone needed to know how simple
it was to turn yourself into a seething pile
of goo, so he called upon the Famous Mockingbird
to spread the word about this... ## - last

cover; last "Emotional Rescue" 07/28/98 (150
shows) according to ZZYZX's Phish Stats; song
ended with Trey setting up a delay loop before
he and Mike moved to the front of the stage
and began a bizarre synchonized duel involving
them swinging their guitar and bass at each
other and around themselves while wandering
across the front of the stage and putting
strange hats on Page and Jon; at one point
Trey and Mike put both the guitar and bass
down on the stage and kicked/stomped the stage
beside them to produce more feedback; in the
end Trey finally "defeated" Mike before the
band walked off stage |

2: Tube -> L.A. Woman > Birds of a Feather
> L.A. Woman, Makisupa Policeman ->
P-Funk Medley, Makisupa Policeman > Touch
Me, Down With Disease
E: Contact, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Set 1: "Wilson" was unfinished.
For the record, Earl Hindman, the actor who
played Wilson on TV's "Home Improvement,"
died on Monday 12/29. "Gin" had
"Show Biz Kids" (Steely Dan) and
"After Midnight" teases. In the
second verse of "NICU," Mike played
the bassline from "Shafty." "2001"
included a "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked
Up)" jam (with some of the lyrics sung),
as well as teases of "Bathtub Gin"
and "Sand."
Set 2, Pre-Funk: "Tube" was reportedly
played after Trey found a frisbee labelled
"Tube" on the stage when returning
from setbreak, which he flashed to the other
band members and the front rows. "Tube,"
about 12 minutes long, was unfinished. "L.A.
Woman" is a Doors cover, played for the
first time (although it was soundchecked on
4/17/93 and teased in Possum on 5/17/92 and
5/30/93). Additionally, the first part of
the "L.A. Woman" jam (before "Birds")
had notable elements of "Timber Ho."
"Birds" included a jam on "L.A.
Woman." The keyword in "Makisupa"
was something like: "we were going to
have Fish sing 'Touch Me,' but we didn't have
the horns and we've forgotten the song."
Then Trey paused and said, "since I got
your hopes up, maybe bringing out P-Funk would
make up for it."
P-Funk: Then George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic
emerged to accompany Phish through a 20-minute
jam that touched on several P-Funk songs and
lyrics. This medley reportedly included elements
(roughly in order) of a rap on the theme "Booty
Ain't Nothing But a Butt," "Get
Off Your Ass and Jam," "Give Up
the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker),"
"P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up),"
and "One Nation Under a Groove."
Clinton riffed on the chorus from "Get
Low" (by Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz).
During the jam a boy (apparently in his late
teens, possibly with Down syndrome) appeared
onstage, dancing next to Trey. He may have
jumped on the stage uninvited, because security
(Carini?) came out about a quarter into the
jam to escort him away. Shortly thereafter,
Trey himself walked off the stage after them,
and returned to escort the boy back to his
original position on-stage. The boy resumed
his dancing next to Trey, who got a noticeable
kick out of how much fun the kid was having.
At one point, Trey even seemed to indicate
to a cameraman to tape the kid dancing --
he pointed to the cameraman, pointed back
to the kid, and seemed to make a "film
him" gesture. The boy remained onstage
throughout the remainder of the P-Funk jam,
and walked off with everyone else at its conclusion.
At the end of the P-Funk jam, Fish was left
on-stage alone playing the vacuum. Fish then
exited, leaving the stage empty for a minute
or two.
Set 2, Post-Funk: The band returned and re-launched
into "Makisupa." During this return
to "Makisupa," Trey said that to
prove having P-Funk sit-in was better than
having Fish sing "Touch Me," Fish
would now sing one line a capella. Page played
the intro of "Touch Me," and Fish
then sang just the first line. "Touch
Me" being the second Doors song played
at the show, it may be relevant that Jim Morrison
was prosecuted for allegedly exposing himself
on March 1, 1969 at Miami's Dinner Key Auditorium
-- not two miles from the American Airlines
Arena. "Contact" had a different
(unidentified) last line, possibly something
about "L.A. Woman" ("L.A. Women
make my funk the P-Funk" ??).
Aftershow: Mike Gordon appeared on bass during
Parliament/Funkadelic's scheduled post-Phish
gig at Miami's Ice Palace Soundstage. |

Pre-Midnight: Set-up included screens behind
the stage, flamingoes and palm trees on it,
and huge coconut-looking balloons hanging
from above. "Wilson" picked up with
the "BLAT BOOM" line -- that is,
where last night's unfinished version left
off. "Weekapaug" had an "Auld
Lang Syne" tease/jam, and "Jungle
Boogie" vocals. "Moma Dance"
had a "Divided Sky" tease. During
the sustained Note in "YEM," Trey
teased "Auld Lang Syne." "Tube"
began mid-way through, finishing where last
night's version left off. Stash had a "Slave"
teast, and "Seven Below" an "Auld
Lang Syne" tease. "Chalkdust"
had "Auld Lang Syne" teases. During
the second setbreak, the PA music included
a number of car-related songs (foreshadowing
the gag at midnight). "Jungle Boogie"
is a Kool and the Gang cover, first time played
(although it has long been in Pork Tornado's
repertoire).
Midnight Gag: As midnight neared during "Jungle
Boogie," Fish's drum kit was moved to
the side of the stage. A 10'x10'-square platform
with a circular rug that had been in the back
left of the stage was moved into Fish's usual
spot. The rug turned out to be a cover for
a hollow center, which lined up with a trap
door under the stage. A miniature car, reportedly
a Mini Cooper, was lowered to the same spot
on the stage. The gutted car was painted light
blue, with flames on the front, and was blacklight-sensitive,
giving it a phosphorescent glow. A full marching
band, replete with cheerleaders (in masks),
came out of the car one-by-one (including
tuba/sousaphone players!). The band was the
Miami Palmetto Sr. High School Marching Panther
Band. Cheerleaders were not [all?] from the
high school, but rather costumed adults. The
marching band also had a mascot in a number
27 jersey (possibly TN Titans' Eddie George's
shirt?), with the name taped over with black
tape, wearing a bunny (?) mask. Also emerging
were costumed dancers similar to [same as?]
the sort of demented bunny-women present at
the IT Festival this summer. The band members
and others were actually walking in from the
back center of the stage, up a set of stairs
under the stage, and out of the car -- giving
the effect that they were all coming from
the car itself. With the stage covered with
dancers, the marching band drumming and blaring...Fish
and the jersey-wearing mascot (and a bunny-creature?)
counted the clock down to midnight. A massive
balloon drop followed with "Auld Lang
Syne." "Iron Man," a Black
Sabbath cover, was performed instrumental
only with the marching band (and fairly briefly).
Phish has never played "Iron Man"
before, although Mike teased it in "Wilson"
on 2/20/93.
Post-Midnight: "I Didn't Know" had
Fish out front on vacuum, singing "Feel
the Heat" through the vacuum, with Trey
singing some lines as well as he filled in
on drums. At one point during this mayhem,
Fish climbed on Page's piano. "Feel the
Heat," played for the first time, is
a song sung by Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg)
with Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly) in "Boogie
Nights." The ditty appears as the intro
to the film's soundtrack. Trey dedicated it
to the Miami Heat basketball team, and called
it "Feel Feel Feel Feel the Heat."
Before launching into "Frankenstein,"
Trey teased the first notes of "Fluffhead." |

kind found in 1980s versions, then a vocal
jam around the song "Coconut"
